Teaching focus welcome

The most far-reaching review of Australian higher education in two decades has strongly reinforced the role of teaching in universities and the strategies adopted by the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC).

Chair of the ALTC Board, Emeritus Professor John Hay welcomed the Bradley Review focus on improving teaching quality and its endorsement of the work of the ALTC.

"Understanding of the importance of quality teaching has gained considerable momentum over the last few years and the ALTC has played a crucial role in bringing this about," Professor Hay said.

"I am delighted that the increasing emphasis on the fundamental importance of teaching that has occurred has been so robustly supported by this review."

Teaching and learning are highlighted throughout the final report from the Bradley Review which makes several specific references to the ALTC.

In the "Findings" section, the panel states that the "ALTC should continue to play a significant role in the further improvement of teaching and learning in higher education.  There is no need for any major change to its mode of operation or focus."

Professor Hay said this strong support was most welcome and indeed timely as it closely follows an independent evaluation that endorsed the direction the ALTC is taking.

"As both the Bradley Review and our evaluation reveal, the ALTC has done a great deal to raise the profile of learning and teaching in Australia."
